Recovery requires faith.
Not everyone believes in God, and that’s okay. But I do believe that recovery requires faith in something.
Faith that tomorrow can be better than today.
Faith that the pain you’re feeling right now won’t last forever.
Faith that the people who have gone before you know what they’re talking about.
Faith that if you keep showing up, keep doing the work, and keep asking for help, things can change.
When I first got sober, I didn’t have much faith in myself. Years of broken promises had taken care of that. So I borrowed faith from others. I trusted the people in recovery who told me that if I followed a simple program and stayed sober one day at a time, my life would get better.
They were right.
Whether your faith is in God, a Higher Power, AA, your support system, or simply the possibility of a better life, hold onto it. Recovery often starts with believing in something before you can see the results.
You don’t have to have all the answers today.
Just enough faith to take the next right step.
One day at a time.
